Walter Dutch Mathus a World War II veteran died at the Veterans Hospital in Marion Illinois. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 2 pm at Pulley Funeral Home with burial at East Salem Cemetery and military rites by Turner Boehm Post No 4 Amvers. He was 40 years, 11 months and 18 days old, born April 19 1911 in Mt Vernon. He married Grace Patterson on March 15 1947 and is survived by his wife, his father Redman Mathus of Mt Vernon, two stepsons Arthur Hulbert in Japan and Burrell Hulbert at home, four brothers and four sisters. He was a member of Missionary church and Turner Boehm Post No 4. He had been ill for eight years and in critical condition for the past week.

Mrs. Menza P. Nichols of 323 South Second Street died at 2:20 am at Jefferson Memorial Hospital after a five day illness. She was 63 years old. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30 pm at South Hickory Hill Church with Rev. Marsh Harpole officiating, burial in South Hickory Hill cemetery. The body lies at Myers Chapel after 7 pm today. She was born June 6 1888 in Jefferson County to David J and Cynthia Bean Hester. She married Lee C Nichols March 19 1910 in Mt Vernon, who survives with four sons Arthur Elmer Howard and Virgil all of Mt Vernon, a brother King D Hester of Culver Ind and 13 grandchildren. A daughter Daisy Marie died in infancy.

CITY OKAYS OVERHAUL OF PARKING METERS
The Mt Vernon city council approved a six month effort to revamp parking meters amid bids and debate. The body also funded street improvements on Ninth and 18th streets with motor fuel tax money, and added Conger Welkin and other streets to the long range plan. Deputy city clerk and treasurer positions were restored at $177.84 monthly starting April 19 after earlier abolition.
