Mechanical heart operation begins for Houston patient
At St Luke's Episcopal Hospital surgeons started at 7 a.m. to replace the implanted mechanical heart of 47 year old Haskell Karp with a human donor heart. The donor was Barbara Ewan, a 40 year old widow from Lawrence Massachusetts. The artificial heart was implanted April 4 and was intended to bridge to a donor. Doctors expect several hours for the procedure and caution it may not extend beyond a week.

Flames sweep collision sinks freighter and barge
A head on crash between the freighter Union Faith and an oil barge near the Greater New Orleans bridge caused a large fire on the Mississippi River. Twenty five of the 51 crew on the Union Faith were unaccounted for and 25 were hospitalized as the ship sank after six hours. The oil barge broke in two and one section sank while the other ran aground. Fire boats battled the blaze as residents watched the river burn and harbor officials feared further spread.
