The Buford Sunday School class of the First Methodist church will host a party at seven p m on Tuesday April 11. Members who have not indicated attendance should call 4091 1033 or 3959 W2 by Wednesday April 5.
Mrs. Raymond Lane hosted the Friendship Club at her parents home in Marlow. A covered dish luncheon followed by a brief business meeting. Contests were won by Mrs. Vivian Highsmith, Mrs. Ruth Lisenby and Miss Bernice Roney. Mrs. W F Morris gave a reading. Sacred songs were sung by the Rev. and Mrs. Roney and their daughter Bernice on piano. A prayer was offered by the Rev. Roney.

The group schedules hearings with John Lattimore and directs returnables for loyalty files to be brought before the committee. Truman’s formal stance makes compliance unlikely.
Congressional Republicans present a 99 word platform pledging tax cuts and a balanced budget. It targets government waste, anti communist stance, farm price supports without Brannan plan, Taft Hartley protections, a broad social security system, veterans and minority rights, and a United American foreign policy promoting world trade while preserving living standards. The digest, adopted February 6, is issued by GOP campaign committees with RNC concurrence, framing party aims as concise principles for the election. The platform emphasizes liberty against socialism and safeguarding economic opportunity.
The Illinois State Federation of Teachers endorsed opposition to bills requiring non Communist oaths for teachers. Miss Mary Wheeler, Oak Park, called the Broyles bills an unnecessary singling out of teachers. The federation also backed social security expansion for teachers, federal aid to schools, the Gateway Amendment, increased state aid, consolidation of districts, nursery schools, and protections for teacher tenure.
The Jefferson county April 11 primary election deadline nears for absentee voting. The final day to apply for an absentee ballot by mail is Thursday April 6, and Saturday April 8 is the last day to vote in person at the county clerk's office. By this morning 99 absentee votes have been cast, 85 in person and 14 by mail, with 33 ballots mailed.
Mr and Mrs Harvey St Clair of Waltonville mark their 53rd wedding anniversary on Tuesday April 4. He is 80 and she 75, in good health though he is nearly blind. They have one son Halsey who lives north of Nason on the Bonnie rural route. no special observance planned.
In a session with Dix and Melba Marlowe and Evelyn Bell present, Jefferson county officials and Cancer Society coordinators urged larger support for the cancer drive. Chairman Powers cited new clues in cancer research and stressed early detection could save many of the 200,000 yearly deaths, calling for intensive education and generous donations.
Mr and Mrs Billy Ray Plem mons of Bonnie welcomed a daughter named Linda Karen born Sunday morning at Good Samaritan Hospital. Mr and Mrs David Russell Sledge of Opdyke welcomed a son born this afternoon at Good Samaritan Hospital, not yet named. Mr and Mrs Miles Osborn of Kell welcomed Roy Arnold, a seven pound five ounce boy, born at 10 07 am Saturday at Jefferson Memorial Hospital. Mr and Mrs Emory Rutherford of Marion welcomed a four pound two ounce daughter born at 7 32 am today at Jefferson Memorial Hospital.

L. E. Gowler Mt. Vernon township assessor and a crew of nine deputy assessors began today the task of assessing personal property in Mt. Vernon and 15 other county townships for taxes. Real estate is assessed every four years. last done in Jefferson county three years ago and will be assessed again later. Gowler is joined by Ben S. Martin E. W. Williford Guy Compton E. E. Richards Charles E. Johnson W. B. Hutchison Ida Belle Right nowar Myrtle Pigg and Lorena Wilson.
The Rev A L Smith longtime pastor remembered for humility and faith in gospel truths. He spoke of mistakes yet continued in his life’s work reading widely and collecting rare theology books. Uncle Ab’s reminiscences recount revival incidents and horse and buggy days in southern Illinois.

Mayor Milton D Forsyth proclaims April as Cancer Control Month in Mt Vernon Illinois urging citizens, institutes, businesses and organizations to cooperate with the American Cancer Society campaign. The city seal and dated proclamation invite support to promote early detection and treatment to reduce cancer deaths.

Dr James M Brown a former Mt Vernon resident and St Louis physician died March 22 in Long Beach California at age 56 He served as a Navy medical officer during World War II and Vietnam era and retired in 1949 as a Captain He leaves wife two sons two sisters and a grandson.
Corporal James Morlan and Pfc. Harley Morlan phoned their mother Hazel Morlan of N 10th Street yesterday from Germany. They expect to be returned to the states soon.
Rosalee Harvey, one year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Harvey of 507 S Seventh street, died at 5 10 am Sunday at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 pm at Combs Chapel in Wayne City with Rev H H Mayberry officiating, burial in Olive Bran e cemetery. The body will remain at Combs Chapel. She is survived by two brothers Edward Lee Gossage 13 and David Wayne Harvey 3 and sisters Sylvia Marie Gossage 10.
Judge Charles T. Randolph of Carmi will open circuit court in Mt Vernon tomorrow. A special grand jury will convene at the courthouse Tuesday morning to deliberate on several recent criminal cases. Jurors are expected to complete their work in one day.
