Final inspection due mid April on Rend Lake sub-impoundment dams
A final inspection on two Rend Lake sub-impoundment dams at Casey Fork Creek and Big Muddy River is expected about mid April. Corps of Engineers district engineer Arthur Robley Jr said work is complete and cable barriers will keep auto traffic off until a future date. Prime contractor Eugene Lule Construction Co. finished most construction last December and seeding is timed for spring. The dams aim to deepen upper lake reaches for a fish and wildlife refuge managed by the state conservation department.

Mt Vernon council weighs zoning for Farm Bureau expansion
Mt Vernon city council and the Zoning Board of Appeals held Monday night hearings over a proposed re zoning of the Farm Bureau property at Harrison and Johnson to permit a 44 by 85 foot addition and a 100 seat auditorium. The council indicated the property might be placed in a multiple family residential zone under a new ordinance, which would allow office buildings, while neighbors voiced objections, and the board postponed a decision to May 9. Additional items included a liquor license request for Nu BowL Lanes and a four foot vacation of 16th street west side from Broadway to Casey Avenue to aid Commercial Credit’s expansion plans.

Demonstration At Boston Jail
About 60 antiwar demonstrators stood silent outside a Boston jail where nine others began 20 day terms for loitering and blocking traffic. The nine were jailed after a melee on the South Boston Courthouse steps where four were knocked down and beaten as they burned draft cases. Ministers and wives aged 30 to 50 joined the silent protest to be renewed daily for the duration of the terms. No incidents were reported.

Viet Cong terrorists struck the U S officers billet at the 10 story Victoria Hotel in predawn violence. The raid used machine guns grenades and a 12 000 gallon roof tank water blast to breach the building.
