June 22 to 28 marks National Home Food Preservation Week urging homemakers to inspect canning gear and start preserving abundant produce. Strawberries are finished while cherries near peak, with July bringing mulberries peaches and apricots. Sugar is plentiful and methods vary from pressure canning to cold packing. Fairfield city police enforced a 10 minute parking limit in front of the Fairfield Post Office. Six motorists were ticketed and paid fines plus costs after appearing in Justice court. Names of those fined include Clauche Dimon Peoria Ir J L Johnston Eldon William G Langard Roburt F Brown Keith Shafer and Million Smith. The rule applies 24 hours, with bright yellow signs marking the stalls.
The Oak Leaf vicinity held their meeting at the school house Tuesday evening with Mrs. Leo Millard and Mrs. Etta Pollet on the committee. Ice creams and cake were served. Ralph Flynn, a 62 year old farmer near Washington, reportedly killed himself due to poor crop conditions. Police said he died at his farm after an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound. The case prompted tributes from local farming community and officials.
