Mt Vernon visitors and family updates mix with illness recoveries and business moves in Brodhead. J N Griffin declares his candidacy for County Judge to be decided by the August 4 primary. He pledges strict law enforcement, impartiality, sobriety for fifteen years, financial restraint, fair elections, road improvement through direct taxation, and a clean office. He urges Republican support and invites voter scrutiny of his record.
An old advertisement touts Dr. Bell's Pine-Tar Honey as a child friendly remedy for deep racking coughs. It claims the pine balsam soothes the throat loosens phlegm and heals irritated tissues with a 25 cent bottle available at druggists.
Atlanta physician Dr F A Jacobson endorses Argo Phosphates as essential for both men and women. He claims pale complexions, fatigue, and nervousness stem from phosphate deficiency and promises rapid improvement in strength, vigor, and appearance with two weeks of treatment. Congress approves conscription for a great national army by draft rather than volunteers. House 307 to 24, Senate 81 to 8 favor draft. volunteer plan defeated 315 to 109 in House and 69 to 38 in Senate. Speaker Clark urged volunteers. drafts supporters cite speed fairness and democracy. Final conference differences on age limits remain unresolved.
