Richmond Branch of L. and N. Rail Opens with Fast Passenger Run

June 10 1918 Courier Journal notes the opening of the Richmond Branch between Stanford and Madison county capi tal. The first passenger train ran to Lancaster in 31 2 minutes with 15 mph speed past Paint Lick amid red flag crowds. Locomotive No 42 hauled rails and materials for eight miles on Knoxville Division. Many local residents listed as present or giving support including M D Elmore of Stanford.

Letter from Bradley Brown Camp Forest Ga June 1918

Bradley Brown recounts leaving Mt Vernon for Fort Thomas and Camp Forest Ga May 1918. He notes two weeks quarantine with daily drilling, hot weather, and joining the 52nd Infantry while some friends join the 51st. He mentions a July arrival in France and expresses soldierly optimism and YMCA support visits from Maretburg and others.

Veterans send regards from holiday gathering with regiments

In a note dated May 31, Bradley Brown of Company H 52nd Infantry writes of a holiday event attended by the 51st and 52nd regiments, medical men, and several civilians. He mentions a pleasant time with plenty of music and signals they will leave soon, sending best regards to friends in Rockcastle.

Farmers urged to plan larger wheat crops and rye effort

The Council of National Defense appeals to farmers to commence new planning for larger wheat crops and a special push to increase rye and buckwheat production. War Savings Stamps can be purchased with surplus funds, boosting the Red Cross through a Kentucky Trio musical tour supporting the Local Red Cross Chapter, likely at the Graded School.
