County Achievement Contest Urges Christian Citizenship and Participation

Secretary Vaughn of Berea College reports the County Achievement Contest draws wide attention in the South. The Southern Cooperation League will back a large southwide program if the county wins. Citizens are urged to promote church and Sunday School work to reach the 1000 point goal and train youths in Christian principles.

War Savings Stamps and Treasury Savings Certificates

Our postmaster urges exchange of War Savings Stamps for Treasury Savings Certificates to continue thrifty saving. Certificates pay 4 percent interest, exempt from most taxes, with denominations of 25, 100 and 1000 dollars and five year maturity. About 625 million in stamps mature January 1, 1923, funds to invest safely with Uncle Sam.

Mt. Vernon Chautauqua assured by Kansas City system

The Mt. Vernon Chautauqua Committee is assured by White & Myers Chautauqua System of Kansas City that July dates will bring the biggest event yet. A Livingston Christian Church conference of Bible School Workers set goals for county revival, 200 baptisms, three Gospel teams, weekly communion, three new ministers, a Bible School in every church, three missionary organizations, and twenty five homes to World Call.

Capt Pete Renaker Dead

Capt Pete Renaker longtime L. & N. conductor died at his Louisville home of stomach cancer aged about 70. A respected figure who ran passenger trains for about 40 years, he is survived by his widow and cherished by friends on the division and beyond.

Kentucky crop report shows rise in corn and potato yields

Kentucky reports corn at 90,748,000 bushels up from 82,150,000 last year, with a 10 year average of 27.3 bushels per acre and 83 percent merchantable. Irish potatoes reach 4,720,000 bushels, up 25 percent from 3,770,000 in 1921. Other crops include sweet potatoes, apples, pears, clover seed, and sorghum. About 5 percent of corn acreage was silos and yield per acre averages 28 bushels, vs 25.6 last year.
