Wartime guidance outlines substitute sweeteners for sugar including maple sugar syrups honey and molasses. It provides equivalences for replacing sugar with honey syrup and corn sugar and suggests using dried fruits marmalades jellies and fruit juices to preserve and sweeten meals and desserts when sugar is scarce.
The United States urges voluntary two pounds per person monthly sugar rations while England France and Italy enforce stricter levels. England offers two pounds per month, France a pound and a half, and Italy one pound. Saccharine substitutes and state control dominate Italian production. German sugar remains affordable at home, with Allies paying higher prices abroad. Wholesale costs abroad range from 10 to 26 cents, versus 7 1/2 cents in the U S.
Wes G. Brown of Quail section answered the call for Over Sea Service and was killed on the western front. The message urges the county to mobilize support, sow wheat, economize, and volunteer for essential war work to back the government and honor the fallen.
The Fourth Liberty Loan will start September 28 and end October 19. Its success is a test of American loyalty and sacrifice, watched keenly in Europe by friends and enemies alike. Every dollar supports soldiers in Europe, with no room for American hesitation.
The Echo de Paris reports that since July 18 the Allied counter offensive has captured more than 70,000 German prisoners along with over 1,000 guns. It also estimates the enemy hold more than 10,000 machine guns taken.
Austria-Hungary is pressed to aid Germany on the western front. An Austro-Hungarian division under Emperor Charles is enroute but has not yet reached the front, currently encamped in Belgium and reluctant to enter the combat zone.
Our County seeks more sheep as the nation faces wool shortages. Rockcastle County organized the Sheep Growers Association on Tuesday August 6 with Mr. H. T. Young as Secretary and plans an early September meeting to adopt the Articles of Association and record membership. Farmers urged to attend the first Saturday meeting at the Court House to join and support wool production and county livestock.
