A Chicago and Northwestern passenger train struck an auto at a grade crossing near State Center Iowa killing four people believed to be J P Franke his wife and two daughters of Albion Nebraska. Major Sanford L Gordon Sanford in WWI service and Mt Vernon speech

Major Sanford L Gordon Sanford joined the British Army cavalry in London on August 5 1914 the day Britain entered the war. He served as second lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery and participated in major Western Front battles through 1917. He was wounded twice and later commanded the 48th Battery before returning to the United States to support Liberty Loans and Red Cross drives. He spoke at the Mt Vernon War Conference on Tuesday August 6.
