Kentucky 1912 Coal Output Shifts to Eastern District

A United States Geological Survey bulletin shows Kentucky mined 16,490,521 short tons in 1912, with the Eastern district leading for the first time. Output rose 2,440,818 tons from 1911, driven by Harlan Johnson Pike and Letcher counties, while Western Kentucky also expanded. The survey notes Kentucky sits with two major coal fields within borders and that 66 percent of 1912 coal was machine mined. 24,304 miners worked, 51 deaths reported, and prospects indicate rapid future growth.
