The March agricultural report from the Kentucky office of the U S Bureau of Crop Estimates shows Kentucky farm land values up about 11 percent in the year, with the United States up about 20 percent. In Kentucky tobacco regions the rise is sharp, with inflated prices in Blue Grass counties and Western Kentucky. Good lands rise more than poor lands, and all plow land metrics show higher dollars per acre and larger percentage gains. By March 1, 1919 Kentucky averages moved from 80 to 95 dollars for good plow land, 37 to 42 dollars for poor plow land, 61 to 70 dollars for all plow land, 81 to 85 dollars for improved land, and 61 to 62 dollars for unimproved land. National figures mirror gains, with good plow land from 91.83 to 113.34 dollars, poor plow land from 51.26 to 60.76, all plow land from 74.31 to 90.01, improved land from 81.89 to 99.24, and unimproved land from 62.08 to 74.41. Farm wages rose nationwide, while Kentucky farmers report 36 percent of last year’s corn on hand and 11 percent of last year’s wheat on hand March 1 1919.
The report shows U S farmers holding 1 092 095 000 bushels of the 1919 corn crop and 165 539 000 bushels of the 1919 wheat crop as of March 1 1919, with oats and barley lists for 1919 and 1918 comparisons. It notes March 1 1919 figures across corn wheat oats and barley.
The National Labor Party of the United States adopts a social morality plank at its first national convention. The 1200 delegates from 37 states and over 40 craft unions back a platform calling for a single morals standard and an age of consent of 18 for sex relations.
The text muses on how nearby friends offer less comfort than distant ones and notes that even light anecdotes about travel may reveal what is not seen. It suggests reformers can fit through small openings, reflecting on how surroundings mirror our lives and urging positive locales for The Advocate’s print context.
