Fertilizing Corn After It Is Up In North Carolina Practice

North Carolina farmers apply heavy fertilizer after corn reaches about four inches. Using a six inch sweep plow to form furrows, 1800 pounds of fertilizer per acre is buried, then 1000 pounds per acre broadcast mid rows a week later, followed by cultivation. A final deep plowing and cultivations aim to deepen roots for drought resistance. The method claims increased yields and soil value, and cites Kentucky farmers achieving 40 to 50 barrels per acre with proper fertilization and cultivation.
