George M Adams a leading Kentucky political figure of two decades ago died at his Winchester home. Born Barbourville in 1837 he served as circuit clerk before the Civil War, who rose to major paymaster under Lincoln and later served in the U S House of Representatives as a Democrat maintaining cross party support in a Republican district.
Matt Adams of Barbourville and Judge Lewis Apperson shaped local convention outcomes. The article recalls his 14 years at Washington with friends among notable jurists and statesmen. He served as register of the land office in Kentucky 1884 1887 to 1891 as Secretary of State 1887 1891 and pension agent for Kentucky 1894 1898. He died living in Winchester after retirement.
