A Saturday night scare near the Kirkpatrick home was settled when the fire company determined the glow was only soot burning from the furnace chimney. No flames, no damage reported, and residents were relieved.

Narrow Escape for Officer Tipton in Mt Sterling
Policeman James C. Tipton narrowly escaped injury Sunday morning when three men attempted to break into Chenault and Crear hardware store. Tipton spotted the suspects on East Main Street and pursued them to the Baumont Hotel area where one drew a pistol and fired as the others fled. Tipton returned fire but due to darkness and rain likely caused no wounds. the trio escaped into rear buildings and stables. Tipton, hailed as a top Mt Sterling officer, plans to carry a repeating shotgun after midnight.
