The Gridiron Kickoff Thrills Mount Dora Hurricanes Win

The opening game of the season ended in a late victory for Mount Dora Hurricanes as their line stopped St Cloud Bulldogs from tying. Cheerleader Patsy Grantham and Squadman Rollin Lane celebrated at the Youth Center with Drum Majorette Mary Lou Davidson beside the scoreboard and lively crowd scenes. Hurricanes and One Victory Face Tavares Friday

Hurricanes, coming off a 13 12 win over St Cloud Bulldogs, prepare for a home game against Tavares Friday night. Mount Dora junior Bobby Bowie opened with an 80 yard TD, Roland Lane added the first extra point, and Richard Gardner scored on a 50 yard drive after a St Cloud fumble. The Bulldogs, led by captain Robert Godwin, rallied with two scores in the final quarter, but Mount Dora held on for the win.

Elizabeth Masten taken suddenly at 76 in Eustis

Mrs. Elizabeth L. Masten 76 died Tuesday at a kin’s home in Eustis after a brief illness. A Mount Dora resident since 1923, she was predeceased by her husband. She was active in Community church and Eastern Star. Survived by son Norman L. Bryan and grandson George R. Bryan of Detroit. Services at Zeller Funeral Home Eustis Friday 2 p.m. with Eastern Star rites at Forest Park cemetery.

Mount Dora High School Band Honors Principal During Halftime

At a football game Mount Dora high schools bands joined for halftime honoring supervising principal D. D. Roseborough. Players Rolanda Lane and others posted yardage totals and the Mount Dora band performed and formed initials and a Confederate flag before playing Are You From Dixie. The remarks from Thomas Welle praised fully using one's talents as a measure of success.

PTA Opens 1956 57 Season With Monday Meeting

Adult Driver Class and Korean Veterans Education Plan

Lou Bethea, director of Lake County's adult education program, aims to create an adult driver training course and a high school diploma program for Korean veterans. Courses could run in Mount Dora, Eustis, Tavares, and Umatilla if demand exists, with the veterans program at Fifth Ward School four nights weekly at 7 p.m. Veterans may receive up to 80 dollars monthly subsistence while attending. An art class is also being considered pending community interest.

Lott Aims to Meet City Challenge for East Town Pool

C O Lott, leader of East Town Progressive Citizenship, expresses confidence that residents will raise at least 1000 dollars by November 1 to fund a new swimming pool. Army approves closure of Haines Creek
