Dr. A. K. Bennett Dies in Michigan at 85
Doctor Arthur K. Bennett, 85, formerly of Mount Dora, died Tuesday in Marquette Michigan where he had practiced nearly 40 years before retiring to Florida. Born March 27, 1881, in Watkins Glen New York, he graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1904 and studied tropical medicine in Liverpool. He spent 12 years in Basra Arabia as a medical missionary and helped build a hospital for British and Turkish troops in World War I. In retirement he helped found Mount Dora’s First Presbyterian Church and was a charter member of the Rotary Club. He also led the Sylvan Shores Property Owners Association and enjoyed lawn bowling.

Conkling Receives Conservation Service Award
Mount Dora resident Donald Conkling received a special certificate for 15 years of service to the Lake Soil and Water Conservation District. The award was presented by Tom Waddell at the district’s monthly meeting at the Agricultural Center. Conkling, a Citrus Culture associate and grower, joined the SCS Supervisors in 1951 and has long advocated preserving Green Swamp and developing the Palatlakaha River Watershed project. Congress recently approved funds to supplement local financing for channel work and control structures.
