Elementary enrollment nears 3,000 while high schools rise about 10 percent to 2,000. The school system represents a $1,750,000 investment, with annual operating costs around $500,000. Mount Dora mourns the loss of Earl Wright Gilbert born December 3, 1872 in Metamora Ohio. He helped run the Gilbert family homestead on the lakefront and operated a steam boat on Lakes Dora Beauclair and Carlton with his father, delivering passengers freight and mail before trains connected the area.
