Federal Surplus Lunches Expand Under 1946 Act Policies
Lake county's school lunch program fronts beef and gravy and butter from federal surplus as drought drives cattle and storage pays off. The National School Lunch Act of 1946 funds cheese dried milk butter and beef with $83 million apportioned nationally, requiring states to match funds. Lake county schools charge 25 cents for elementary and 30 cents for high school lunches, with non profit operation and reduced or free meals for eligible children. Mrs Brenda Kuykendal left supervision. Mrs Eva Herrod leads Mount Dora lunchrooms.
