Surplus Property Case Dismissed By tax Judge

Federal District Judge Bryan Simpson in Jacksonville dismissed the non jury case against Atty. Zera D. Giles of Leesburg who faced fraud charges over wartime surplus property. Testimony showed Giles acted as purchasing agent for Lake County and the county prosecutor, earning a 5 percent commission and selling county tanks to private buyers for parts after securing them from war surplus stocks. The judge questioned the county clerk about the need for Army tanks, noting no clear county purpose for such equipment.
