Mount Dora buzzed over a proposed city zoo when council delays stalled site approval at Gilbert Park and park commission clearance. Local showman Lavoy Windy Winton offered about 1500 in animals, including a South African tapir and monkeys, but cold weather and slow decisions forced relocation of the animals for the winter.
A Social Security Administration district representative will be at Mount Dora City Hall on November 7 and 21 from 9 a.m. to noon. The visit offers help to apply for old age and survivors insurance benefits obtain Social Security numbers and get program information.
In the Lake County Florida probate court Ella Whistman estate seeks final discharge of executrix Mella Whistman. The petition for distribution and final discharge will be heard November 15, 1962 before Judge W A Milton Jr. Attorney filed affidavit in lieu of final returns under Chapter 74.22 Florida Statutes.
Lucye Elizabeth Tindall of Jacksonville was crowned Miss Howey Academy of 1963 in the academy pageant. She performed a jazz dance routine and won the swim finals. Susan Snell of Melbourne earned first runner-up and the talent award. Kathy Borman of Leesburg won second runner-up. Tindall will compete at the Miss Florida Pageant in Sarasota next summer. Judges included Andrew Chak of Leesburg and Barbara Hoff of Orlando.
Tangerine residents are urged to expect United Appeal solicitations as NOEL joins the campaign in northwest Orange County. NOEL, which operates with a 21 member board, supplied emergency groceries and clothing to hundreds of families and children in the past year and received a $4,000 allocation from United Appeal.
Mount Dora PTO hosts a Halloween Carnival at the new Community Bowl starting 6 p.m. under Mrs. Jimmy Sheddan with Girl Scouts and Key Club helpers. Preschoolers parade for judging across grades, ribbons awarded, ice cream served, and food booths run by Senior volunteers to fund the annual senior trip.
Fourteen Florida communities have met their Lake County Chamber membership quotas. Eustis leads with 419 members, followed by Leesburg 141, Tavares 268, Mount Dora 212, and Clermont 169. Percentage of quota achieved tops Lake Jem at 350 percent, then Montverde 280 percent and others with 217 to 100 percent.
