Mount Dora on October 31 hosts a P T A carnival with a 6 45 p m costume parade led by the high school band and judged for prizes. The 7 30 p m carnival opens in the high school gym with cake booths and a fortune teller Madame Fatima. Proceeds fund new band uniforms and two movie projectors. prizes include a console radio phonograph.
W F Duggan seeks to suppress slot machine evidence amid ongoing charges with Sheriff Willis McCall. Judge A S Herlong postponed the hearing to December while the circuit court reviews suppression motions. Duggan and son face grand larceny counts for alleged gun theft from a car, with four witnesses reportedly jailed at the time of statements.
The Ministry of Music at First Methodist Church will present Handel's The Messiah this Christmas season. Rehearsals start Wednesday at 7 30 P M and continue weekly with a guest conductor to lead final rehearsals and the performance. Chorus singers should contact Rev Gibson to join.
Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Wilcox announce the birth of their son Dennis Earl at Memorial Hospital Eustis Waterman on October 17. The family lives at 926 East Fifth Avenue.
Karl Lehmann begins his 14th year as secretary of the Lake County Chamber of Commerce after election at the 31st annual meeting in Eustis. U S Senator L Holland was guest speaker. C Harold Hippler was reelected president for a second term. Officers elected include George J White A S Herlong Jr W Donald Conkling Hugh G Martin Jr Lacy Thomas C F Evans and Henry Self Amatillo. A business meeting followed with dinner and an open forum led by Senator Holland.
Dorans watch hyacinths pour from Dora river through Apopka and Zellwood canals into Lake Dora on Saturday and Sunday. A fence plan to block most blooms at Beauclair was approved but not begun. Gilbert Park shore remains polluted, and no funding decision from Orange County was reported.
A Lake County land sale in Tavares on November 19 aims to revive Mount Plymouth as a city with plots selling for as low as 15 dollars. In 1939 Mount Dora community leader Mrs. Mabel Cleary turned a neglected jungle at the water’s edge into a thriving park. She supervised 10 non paying utility bill workers, moved a blacksmith shop, and earned Kiwanis recognition as their mother. Elizabeth Evans aided, as townfolk rallied to fund and finish the project.
The Women’s club organized a park restoration turning Gilbert Park into a picnic site by removing a whisky cache and improving facilities at a cost of about $65 plus a boat house conversion. They donated shelter seating and fish cooking areas while the city spent roughly $1,000 to sand the beach. Mrs Cleary also led a cemetery reno near town, guiding its revitalization efforts.
Mount Dora businesses unveil the Merchants Pot plan to boost pre Christmas sales. The weekly promotion starts in November with a chance to win a merchandise certificate worth up to 200 dollars, funded by local merchants. The program aims to attract shoppers from Lake and Orange counties and promote Mount Dora commerce.
Albert David Sanders died Oct 14 at his Easthampton Massachusetts home three days before his 95th birthday. A longtime Easthampton insurer he spent 15 winters in Mount Dora as a lawn bowling team member. Funeral and burial were in Northampton. He leaves two daughters Amy Hines and Ruth Tomson and a son Albert D. Sanders Jr.
The Mount Dora Youth Center asks residents to donate a mirror a rug runner and a pool table if unwanted. The items will furnish the center near the bowling courts. Officers elected include Anne Pike president Patty Claflin vice president and several others in duties such as decoration and refreshments.
A court case involves broker B Tiller listed as a defendant though he acts only as a medium to hold $3500 in escrow. The Dora broker relates a sale collapse and a refund claim by the purchaser, while the owner seeks restitution for losses. The court must decide who deserves the funds.
County health officer John Ragan Jr and City Council sanitation chair Otis Hale will lead a city wide inspection of disposal facilities this week to condemn open or rusty cans and require proper containers. If orders are ignored the matter will go to City Attorney Tom Cooley for enforcement.
