Mount Dora on October 31 hosts a P T A carnival with a 6 45 p m costume parade led by the high school band and judged for prizes. The 7 30 p m carnival opens in the high school gym with cake booths and a fortune teller Madame Fatima. Proceeds fund new band uniforms and two movie projectors. prizes include a console radio phonograph.

Mrs. Mabel Cleary Transforms Gilbert Park In Mount Dora

In 1939 Mount Dora community leader Mrs. Mabel Cleary turned a neglected jungle at the water’s edge into a thriving park. She supervised 10 non paying utility bill workers, moved a blacksmith shop, and earned Kiwanis recognition as their mother. Elizabeth Evans aided, as townfolk rallied to fund and finish the project.

The Women’s club organized a park restoration turning Gilbert Park into a picnic site by removing a whisky cache and improving facilities at a cost of about $65 plus a boat house conversion. They donated shelter seating and fish cooking areas while the city spent roughly $1,000 to sand the beach. Mrs Cleary also led a cemetery reno near town, guiding its revitalization efforts.

A D Sanders Dies In East

Albert David Sanders died Oct 14 at his Easthampton Massachusetts home three days before his 95th birthday. A longtime Easthampton insurer he spent 15 winters in Mount Dora as a lawn bowling team member. Funeral and burial were in Northampton. He leaves two daughters Amy Hines and Ruth Tomson and a son Albert D. Sanders Jr.
