WAVES recruiters from the Orlando Navy station will visit Mount Dora on Friday October 29 to interview eligible local women aged 20 to 36 for enlistment in the Navy Women’s Reserve. Yeoman Alice B. Ritchie and Specialist Charles M. Allen will conduct interviews in the afternoon, with interested applicants urged to contact Mrs. Elizabeth Kramer for arrangements. Recruits will train at Hunter College in New York City before serving at naval shore stations.
The W.S.C.S. holds a prayer service Wednesday October 27 at 7 30 p m in the Parish House. A self denial offering will be taken. The service will be conducted by Rev. Caxton Doggett the pastor.
Charles S. Given of Winter Garden was guest speaker at Kiwanis as the club observed Columbus Day. He presented a life of Columbus and critiqued widespread geographic misconceptions. District reports by Sedano Brown and Barnett were discussed with Fortner and others attending the Jacksonville convention. Denbroeder returned from the north and Dr. James A. Richards was a guest.
The Mount Dora USO Service Club reports 561 boys attended activities last week with 182 dancing Saturday night. A new dart game appeared and Battery B of the 224th is announced for a future event. Ruth Brooks notes many state and foreign visitors are registered and invites outsiders to inspect the registration book.
The paper announces all prior magazine club offers are canceled and only one new club deal remains available for new or renewing subscribers. Readers are urged to act quickly to secure the reduced prices by combining magazine subscriptions with a full year to the Topic.
War Book IV will be distributed in Mount Dora on October 25 26 and 27 from 9 to 4 30 in the room next to the Chamber of Commerce. Sorrento distribution is Monday October 25 from 1 to 5. East Town distributions are Tuesday and Wednesday October 26 and 27 from 1 to ?. Lake Jem location is Wednesday October 27 in the grocery store from 9 to 12. Volunteers meet at the Ration Board rooms Saturday October 23 at 2 o'clock.
Chaplain Fred Gothy stationed at Clasint will preach at First Methodist Church Mount Dora during the evening service Sunday. The service begins at 8 o clock. Gothy is an ordained Lutheran minister and the public and soldiers are invited to attend.

Captain Eddie Rickenbacker urges nationwide effort, noting vast idle scrap and the need for every person over ten to contribute one hour to salvage drives for 1943 and 1944 war needs.

The High School Band plans a Saturday concert at 8 p m in the Community Building to honor former Student Director Edward Katte now a V-12 student at the U S Naval College in Columbia South Carolina. Edward will perform with the band and attend a post concert party. An expanded program is planned with several other former members hoped to attend though arrangements fell short. No admission charge and all are invited.
Master Sergeant Howard L Rutherford, formerly of Mount Dora, received the Legion of Merit in the Middle East theater. He served at MacDill Field in 1941 and at Fort Myers and Lakeland bases before going to the front, where Brigadier General Aubry Strickland presented the award on a desert base. The citation praised his ceaseless efforts aiding his squadron, while his wife stays in Tampa with her parents. Parents Mr and Mrs J A Rutherford are now in Miami.
The seven new recruits join B Company as 160 members have served, with 102 discharged over two and a half years. Enlistees come from Eustis Mount Dora Tavares Umatilla Cassia and more, while seven others may be discharged this month reducing totals. Governor Holland urged enlistment to fill state guard ranks.
Miss Edith Ankers becomes head of the Physical Therapy Department at Waterman Memorial Sanitarium and Hospital in Eustis. A University of PennsylvaniaPT graduate, she arrives from Wilmington Delaware with strong recommendations. The department features modern equipment and supports the hospital’s shift to a community, lay-led board management for financial stability.
Miss Lillian Irene Swort of 737 East Eleventh avenue is enrolled as a student at Ohio University in Athens. The university begins its 139th year with 1301 civilian students enrolled and three ASTP cadet companies receiving instruction.

Dickson Jr promoted to Major at Gowen Field Idaho after service in Porto Rico Nicaragua and Panama and recent return to the States. Harry R. Morse reports to Naval Base Philadelphia awaiting Temple University medical program start January 1 after earning a B A from Dartmouth in the No V-12 Reserve. Douglas De Vault Roseborough enters the U S Naval Reserve Midshipmen School at Notre Dame. After indoctrination he becomes a midshipman and then an ensign in the Naval Reserves.
Mr George Church of Sylvan Shores grown potatoes in his Leicester Massachusetts summer garden drew many admiring looks at the Topic window this week. The spuds were guarded and safe while Mr Chrich also displayed prize vegetables from his own garden at local fairs.
Hon. I N Kennedy director of the Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission announces the duck hunting season runs from November 2 to January 10 with hunting permitted daily across the state. The Board of County Commissioners has no jurisdiction over setting the season.
