State Highway department faces a decision on the Pinecrest Sylvan Shores corridor for the four-laning project. If chosen the route would pass through the valley into Pinecrest, making some properties unavailable for home building while the remainder would be unharmed.
Mount Dora merchants voted to oppose a proposed occupational license tax after Mayor Patton urged rate talks. City Attorney warned it may not deter out-of-town artisans and could be costly to administer, while dry cleaner O. D. Stephens cited other firms soliciting business without city fees. The association passed a resolution to record opposition.
Mr and Mrs Durell of Mount Dora announce the birth of a girl weighing seven pounds born October 8 at Waterman Memorial hospital Eustis. The poem quote by Wordsworth is included.
Dr. H. T. Fenn a long time Mount Dora physician died October six at Orange Memorial hospital Orlando after a three month illness. He was 68 and had battled a heart condition since a near death experience as a youth. He trained at Tulane and practiced in Mount Dora after a stint in Youngstown. He established Mount Dora Pharmacy and focused on medicine after selling the store. He leaves four daughters two sisters and two brothers and 12 grandchildren. Masonic services followed the funeral rites at Rehbaum's Funeral home with burial at Forest Park cemetery.
Stewart J. Walpole longtime owner and publisher of American Field died at Durham Young hospital Leesburg at 76. He began as a Chicago bookkeeper, became owner, wrote hunting and fishing pieces and archaeology articles for Mexican Life. The Walpoles moved to Mount Dora eight years ago. He leaves a wife two sons a daughter a brother and two grandchildren. Services will be held with Robe Reed officiating.
A Sylvan Shores residents debate on annexation highlighted benefits from Mount Dora services and potential tax changes, with speakers James DeGarmo and Ernest G. Rice arguing for and against. They noted school access, fire and trash services, police and street lighting, and the need for street paving and sewage planning, ahead of the December vote.
The Sylvan Shores Property Owners Association voted to donate $100 toward building the East Town swimming pool at its meeting last week. The sum was raised from member contributions with an additional $30 added to it.
City officials and Planning chair D. Fletcher Crane await Consulting Engineer Albert E. O Neall for further talks on locating a sewage disposal plant at the current city dump or at a site on Charles Street near the IceHouse theatre. The plan includes potential school connections and cost estimates of 225000 for the dump option and 118000 for the Charles Street site with uncertain school linkage.
