The Florida Telephone Corporation asks regulators to approve higher rates to finance a 3 million dollar expansion and improvement program. Executed by Max E. Wettstein the plan argues costs rose sharply since 1940 with payroll, materials, and line expenses all up while revenue grew slower, threatening future service and bond markets. Garbage Fee Set By Council In Mount Dora Area

Mount Dora and nearby areas will pay a monthly garbage and trash collection fee, 75 cents in Mount Dora city limits and 1.25 dollars in Sylvan Shores, to fund updated service. The ordinance, approved on first reading Tuesday, ties the fee to the light bill and allows power shutoff for nonpayment. The new truck began Oct 1, replacing an old open truck service that cost 175 dollars monthly. The plan, based on practices in Florida towns, also requires minimum charges for businesses and notes residents may dispose of waste only under health law guidelines.

Lake County Citrus Growers Earn 6.99 Million on 1946 47 Crop

Lake County agricultural data show citrus growers received about 6.992 million dollars on the 1946 47 crop. They produced five million boxes of oranges for fresh use worth 3.75 million, two million cans worth 920 thousand, and one million fresh grapefruit boxes worth 940 thousand. Tangerines brought about 500 thousand. Prices per box averaged 1.25 for fresh oranges and 0.46 for canner oranges, 0.94 for fresh grapefruit and 0.42 for canned grapefruit, with tangerines at 1.27. The figures rely on USDA statistics and indicate prices dropped from 1945 46 but optimism exists for 1947 48.

In Lake County a dispute between Duggan and Sheriff McCall widens into a court battle over two slot machines found in Sylvan Shores and at a Donnelly Street shop. Mount Dora Fire Devastates P. B. Goethe Crate Mill

A Saturday night blaze at the P. B. Goethe crate mill in Mount Dora destroyed much of the main building and rear saw mill. Eighty workers were laid off as firemen, hampered by a corroded hydrant and broken wrenches, fought the flames for 23 minutes before gaining control. Major losses included 13,000 pounds of wire and 50,000 crate lids, with a plan for fire department equipment overhaul and regular hydrant inspections.
