Land Deal and Canal saga in Apopka marsh history
In 1879 the Apopka Canal Co sought four fifths of marsh land north of Lake Apopka to Beauclaire for a canal linking the lakes. By 1888 a canal eight miles long, 27 to 30 feet wide and six to 10 feet deep was dug, with sections widened for boat passages, amid extended reclamation testing. The venture involved 7,000 acres, led to delays, and spurred growth like Delta City before waning. Alexander St Clair Abrams later pressed land claims near Tavares and the railroad.
