Florida Citrus Industry Worth About Fifty Million a Year
The 1935-36 Florida citrus season proved most profitable in four years. Through May 30 oranges averaged 2.97 a box, grapefruit 2.56 a box, with higher prices than recent years. Based on state shipments to June 12 1936 totaling about 14.39 million orange boxes, 7.08 million grapefruit boxes and 1.84 million tangerine boxes, the state’s return is around 50 million dollars after transport costs, with growers netting over 30 million on the trees. Overseas Highway To Link Key West With Mainland
The Interstate Commerce Commission cleared the project to sell railway rights of way to the Overseas Toll and Bridge district for an overseas highway from the mainland to Key West. A $3,600,000 WPA loan was approved to fund construction, enabling automobile and truck travel without ferries, with prompt cooperation expected from the State Road Department.
