Bad Dream of War Mentioned in November Memoir
A soldier recalls frantic weeks of war on a November 11 diary entry. He describes near-constant tension, sleepless nights, exhausted days, scarce rations, and an urge to avoid detailing traumatic experiences. The writer notes relief as the intensity lessens and mental strain eases.
Egyptian customs strange to us in Cairo letter
A Cairo letter describes a religious day in the dead city of old Cairo where families sleep over in tomb chambers. The writer notes thronged streets, alive with gala dress and food baskets, and details a grand alabaster mosque with crystal chandeliers and Persian carpets. Men kneel on the floor facing East during services and harems sat on a back balcony.
Wedding Procession Through Village Arrives at Night
A visiting party recalls a village wedding with a forward procession of hundreds, British officers and Americans present, a dancing horse in gold adornments, women in color gowns and black veils, tea, music, and a long ceremonial journey ending with a chicken dinner. The groom’s arrival is delayed with a prior volley of shots and a private Koran guided rite occurs before feasting.
