Mount Dora Flourishes With Winter Attractions

Mount Dora promotes a full winter program of sports and leisure with a recreation center at Donnelly Park and lawn bowling at Lakeside Park. The city offers tennis, croquet, gambling and athletic fields, a Yacht Club on Lake Dora, two golf courses, a 1929 Community Building, and abundant fishing and hunting opportunities for visiting guests.

Resignation of Dr Lambert from Mount Dora Church

Dr. Lambert resigns as pastor of Virginia Avenue Baptist Church Mount Dora effective November 15 after two years in Florida. He will preach a farewell sermon November 11 then depart for Kentucky with Mrs Lambert. The couple contributed to a fully organized Sunday school and active auxiliaries as Mrs Lambert led statewide Sunday school campaigns. They will lead a growing Parkland area Louisville church with about 867 members and a near thousand in Sunday school.

Destructive Moth Threatens Local Oleanders

A specimen of a destructive moth and its egg on an oleander leaf is shown as the culprit. Mrs. Zell urges residents to destroy any moths seen to save the hardy shrubs which have suffered damage. Caterpillars have formed cocoons and are being watched closely.

Community Armistice Day Vesper Service Planned

A community vesper service will be held at the Community Auditorium Sunday afternoon from 4 to 5 o'clock. Churches join with the Parent Teacher Association to honor Education Week and Book Week with Dr. A. M. Brodie as speaker on Parents Responsibility for the Education of Children. He is pastor of the Congregational church and ex Near East Relief worker. Music by Mrs. Esther Wyatt and the First Methodist Choir, led by Dr. A. A. Stanley, with Perry B. James presiding. Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will act as ushers.

Dr Dickson Receives Exhibit Certificate for Grapes

Dr R W Dickson received an exhibitor's certificate from the Florida Exhibit Century of Progress for a bunch of grapes from his Lake county vineyards sent for exhibition. The certificate bears the Florida Exhibit seal and signatures of Governor David Sholtz, the Florida State Chamber of Commerce president, Lorenzo A Wilson, Florida World's Fair Commission chairman, and E M Brown, Florida Exhibit manager.

Marie Slack Becomes Senior at Florida State College for Women

Miss Marie O Slack of Mount Dora joined 241 fellow seniors in Tallahassee as Florida State College for Women held the investiture ceremony in the college auditorium. Dr Edward Conradi, the college president, placed mortar boards on each senior’s head marking their commencement attire.

Kiwanis Club News Highlights Meeting Speakers and Visits

The Kiwanis program features Dr. A. M. Brodie as speaker with last year’s attendees urged to return. Clermont Kiwanis joined Mount Dora for an inter-club program with music by harmonica and piano and a talk on Education by Dr. Fleishman during Education Week. Clermont guests include multiple members from New Albany Indiana and local visitors J. O. Bowman and Mrs. Esther Wyatt. Fletcher Crane won the attendance prize. Mount Dora Kiwanis will visit Eustis Rotary on the 23rd for another inter-club meeting.

Stores Close Monday for Armistice Day

As Armistice Day comes on Sunday all stores have agreed to close on Monday the nineteenth. Shopping Saturday will be busy with stores not opening until Tuesday, so plan accordingly.

Golden Wedding Celebration Was Colorful Event

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer M. Wentworth celebrated a two day golden wedding with eight children present for a family reunion. About 200 friends visited open house Monday afternoon as flowers cakes and cider punch adorned the scene. Mayor M W Simpson presented a civic honor, and gifts included a gold headed cane and a gold bowl ladle engraved with wedding dates 1856 1906 and 1884 1934 to pass to the next golden wedding in the family.
