Lawn Seeding and Fertilizing Guidelines
Preparatory to planting, rake the permanent grass sod with a stiff-toothed rake to loosen the sod and bring soil to the surface. Apply about 20 pounds of 6-6-6 fertilizer per 1,000 square feet. Seeding rates per 1,000 square feet are six pounds Italian rye, 2 to 3 pounds Kentucky blue, or about 10 pounds red top. Keep the lawn moist until germination. About a month after seeding, fertilize again at 10 to 15 pounds per 1,000 square feet.
