Chief Explains Why Patrolmen Did Not Force Arrest
Mount Dora police hope a Florida Peace Officers bill will grant city police wider arrest powers after an incident at Fifth and Highland. Thomas McKenzie, a Columbia, South Carolina man, held a cocked gun for about 30 minutes while officers urged him to drop it. Deputy McCall arrived, McKenzie was shot and wounded, and the sheriff faces charges. Chief James Orr says the bill would let municipal police shoot when a suspect resists arrest, a point debated at a Lakeland convention.
