Summer fishing tales with the Kennedy family at New Smyrna
The Kennedy family hosts guests Harry and C. B. Backus at their New Smyrna beach home and enjoys boat fishing where Christine Kennedy Downs and Mike Downs reel in weary catfish while a squid douses a guest. Dr. J J Lee’s bass lure snaps a lily pad, then the same bass slips the line after a bold strike.

Florida Central Line Train Through Lakeside Hills
A reader recounts a ride on a friendly Atlantic Coast Line coach touring Central Florida from Sorrento to Sanford. The trip blends 19th century charm with pragmatic details, including a coal stove in the coach, absence of air conditioning, and social interactions with crew. The author notes a halt for a pulp wood car and a private spur locomotive hauling cypress logs, with vivid scenes of cattle, horses, and a colt watched by the crew. The piece highlights the train's slower pace, the crew’s access to local lore, and the lack of diner service.
