Florida needs a modern, safe statewide highway system
Florida highway engineers outline a goal of a self sustaining statewide network that moves cars, trucks and tourists smoothly and safely. A design standard blueprint assigns 22 foot minimum widths for heavy traffic roads, limits curves to 6 percent, and emphasizes sight distance and pavement quality. The state system carries 77 percent of traffic on 6,489 miles while counties hold 78 percent of roads yet only 23 percent of traffic, guiding priority funding and expressway development.
