How Dixie Was Composed by Daniel Emmett
Edward W Bok recounted Emmett’s claim that Dixie was written in one day in 1859 for Bryant Minstrels in New York City. Emmett said the words derived from northerners wishing to be in Dixie's Land and one bar of music formed the tune. The song rose to popularity as a Southern war anthem after New Orleans performances.
