Arnold the Flying Pioneer Heads to War Observer Role
Maj. Gen. Henry H. Arnold, chief of the Army Air Corps, arrives in England as an official war observer. A pupil of the Wright brothers in Dayton, he spans the early era of military aviation with 140 flights and 29 hours in the air in 1911 and has won the Mackay Trophy twice for daring flights and leadership. He advocates mass production of combat craft and training of pilots, while balancing duties as an active flyer. The piece highlights his long career, public stance on air power, and personal hobbies.
