Second Mate Willard F. Fahrner survived the Fort Mercer disaster off Cape Cod after the tanker split in a 55 foot storm. He tied ropes into a ladder, helped others reach life rafts, and waited through a freezing night before rescue. Fahrner later wrote of the experience for Argosy while visiting Mount Dora.

Board abandons bond plan for public school building program
Lake county's public schools will fund a 2.2 million dollar building plan via revenue notes rather than a bond issue. Architects are engaged and construction will start in early summer, with details on school allocations not released.
