Rivers of Mud Inundated Herculaneum Town

Herculaneum, called the Town of Hercules, near Mount Vesuvius, was buried by hot mud flows after a volcanic eruption. About 4,000 residents fled by boats or to Naples as mud depths reached 30 to 60 feet. Archaeology uncovered theaters, temples, and wooden house frameworks preserved by the mud. Jewelry and ancient shells remained in cupboards, while relics of the town’s past emerge through continued digging.
