Treaty of Versailles examined on its twentieth anniversary
The essay reviews the Versailles treaty signed June 28, 1919, its failures and floating provisions, notably the League of Nations, German borders, disarmament, and colonial issues. It recalls the Big Four, the Saar and Alsace Lorraine status, and notes the irony of aims for a firm peaceful order amid rising tensions before World War II. It ends with the curious tale of Article 246 demanding Sultan Mkwawa’s skull and its uncertain fulfillment.
