The Lake County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold its annual meeting at the Leesburg Community Center on Friday June 15 at 7 p.m. Officers will be elected and Donald W. Stout deputy manager of the southeastern area of the American National Red Cross in Atlanta will speak.
Charles R Tucker aged 87 died May 28 in Middleboro Massachusetts memories of his years in Mount Dora. He wintered there six years until age eighty and found joy in showing color slides to children and teaching the hobby of phy xiative of Massachusetts. He taught school in New York City for many years.
Firemen battled a vacant East Town residence overnight but could not control the blaze. Fire Chief Harold Larsen reported no cause could be found and described the home, owned by Joe William, as a complete loss.
Mount Dora resident Fred Sleight and his wife Eleanor toured Cuba on business and archeology for the Central Florida Museum. An army scare arose when a water bottle with a red top was mistaken for a time bomb, later dismissed after a letter from President Batista confirmed courtesy to the visitors. The Sleights described Cuba under martial law with improving roads and schools and warned Batista could win loyalty by investing in education and water projects.
An automobile crash at a Bay Grove intersection near Mount Dora and Eustis killed Nell Fischer, a bystander who died after aiding others in a truck stand collapse. Several others, including children and drivers, were injured. Fischer died after arrival at the hospital.
City officials appointed Councilmen Prinz and Simpson and Mayor Patton to study a request to grant 10 acres of city land for an elderly home north of llthav near East Town. Dr. E. E. Lewis reported six blocks in Lake County were identified as the best site in a survey for the welfare project promised by the Board of County Commissioners. The committee will confer on city approval before approaching the Welfare committee and county commissioners.
Mount Dora council approves a flying saucer stunt for June 30. The Merchants Association may drop paper plates from an airplane to spark interest in a sale, with prizes to be awarded. The council also approves $200 in the next year’s budget to aid the promotion.
A wreck near the highway left Mrs. Screws with a concussion and in shock. Authorities could not immediately question her about why the car swerved and crashed through a building, killing a resident and injuring others as the vehicle plowed inside.
Mr and Mrs F M Howell of Zellwood announce the birth of a son born on June 4 at Waterman Memorial hospital.
City budget cuts deny Police Department its extra officer, heavy cruiser, and two radios while deferring a new fire truck and large storage projects. A resolution urging City Council approval on Tuesday night passed to support a proposed eight unit efficiency project by W. A. Rucker of Riverside. The site is to be near downtown but kept confidential. the units will be family style with kitchenettes as part of Mr. Rucker’s building plans.

Work Superintendent Rollin Javeng found a letter in his father's souvenirs noting seven cars in two hours on Highland street in 1913. He then conducted a 1956 count at the Donnelly Fifth intersection and reported a much larger figure for City Council Tusadey.
