Fire Underwriters Probe Cause of Crate Mill Blaze
Insurance investigators examined the Camp Street crate mill fire that leveled the idle Consumers Hamper Co plant. Owner P B Goethe and executive Henry W Land noted the mill had not operated for weeks and the blaze followed a prior October 1947 fire. Foreman Leon Mulkey called in the fire as flames breached the structure, threatening nearby homes. The loss ends the plant and a $3 000 payroll during peak season, with operation deemed unlikely due to high local labor costs.
