The State Board of Health inspector planned a Mount Dora visit this week to assess Lakeside pool conditions and see if the summer swim program for about 90 local children can be salvaged. Suggestions included forming a private club to operate the pool and alternative sites at Lake Gertrude and Gilbert Park with a future civic project.

The 250 year old bronze clock famed for enduring wars has been moved to Mount Dora Florida. Malvina Cornish says the clock survived two world conflicts by hiding in a ground box and was brought from Belgium to Florida in a suitcase.

Shipley’s New Home Crashes Into Basement

A heavy rain left sand beneath a foundation wall unstable causing the entire living room wall to collapse into the basement. W G Shipley, known for moving an old house and transplanting a 25 foot palm, oversaw masons during the incident at Third and Tremain. Red Kennedy, 56, known as Walker M. Kennedy, recalls 50 years around Mount Dora. The Florida lawyer grew up in Umatilla, studied at Southern College and the University of Florida, practiced in Tavares, served as county prosecutor amid Prohibition era bootlegging crackdowns, and once worked as a shipyard carpenter in Jacksonville.

Council To Act On Garbage Bids Tuesday

Mount Dora Council plans to open bids Tuesday evening for a load packer garbage truck to modernize the collection system. City Clerk William Stewart notes only one bid on the truck basis, with several firms promising in person bids. If awarded, two city units would cost about 5200 and the new system could start in October to replace odor prone open truck collection.

Kellogg Dies in East A Winter Resident Remembered in Florida

Gilvia Burr Kellogg aged 81 died July 22 in Westport Connecticut. He once operated a model dairy and food farm that drew students from the University of Connecticut and officials from the State Department of Health for study. His widow Adell Hamilton Kellogg is a direct descendant of Alexander Hamilton. The Kelloggs were active Shuffleboard Club members during winters in Mount Dora.
