Mount Dora extends its win streak to twelve as players Eckholdt Hale and Brantley drive in runs. Clermont pitcher Gaines and fielder Johnson make key plays, while Bill Wingler earns praise for keeping the team organized and on track.
Mount Dora Kiwanis members join a Winter Park banquet as the new Kiwanis Club is chartered for 31 members. Dignitaries include C S Galloway as president, J Grady Burton district governor and Dr Ernest B Milam past Jacksonville president. Lake County clubs gift flags, a Kiwanis bell, and gavel. Eleven Mount Dora Kiwanians attend, with over two hundred guests from Jacksonville to West Palm Beach.
The Mount Dora Pharmacy and the Lake View Pharmacy announce an economical plan to alternate evening hours Thursday afternoons and all day Sunday through the summer. Both stores will stay open Saturday night. if one is closed, customers should go to the other.
A year ago at a meeting with Mayor Lackey and the Fire Committee chair, rules were adopted still in force. Access to the fire truck is limited to qualified department members. volunteers are requested by officers if needed. The fire truck has right of way. cars must stay at least a block away. fire hose must not be crossed by vehicles. Fire Police members are Frank Drake, Lloyd Atkins, Rollin Javens, and Charles Kelly. Fire Chief is E. E. Truskett. Truck officers include Wm Williamson, A. J. Mosteller, Ernest Mosteller, Grady Simpson. Team 1: Fletcher Crane captain, Otis Hale, Harry Clark, R. N. White Jr., Harold Wilson, E. E. Nutter. Team 2: O. M. Simpson captain, Ross Tremain, Clayton Tremain, Wendell Perry, Wallace Pike, Alfred Carter.
Dr. C Conklin and Mrs R C Conklin left last Thursday on a business trip to New York State. They hope to be back on or before August 10.
Florida health officials report 1930 malaria deaths at 332, rate 22.4 per 100 000, down from 1929 when 470 died at 32.8. Data by Dr Stewart G Thompson, Florida Bureau of Vital Statistics, Florida Health Notes. Dixie county highest rate 307.7 with 20 deaths. Gadsden 27 deaths at 90 rate.
Jack Wilkin reels an eleven and a half pound bass from Lake Apopka in Lake County as visitors including O A Cane and A D Cane join Mr and Mrs Wilkinson. Lake County earns a nickname for its big mouth bass.
The fire company answered three calls Monday. In the forenoon a stove fire at Grady Cooley's home, 131 Ninth Avenue West, was quickly extinguished. In the afternoon a blaze at D. McDonald's home on Tavares Lake Shore Drive, thought to be from an unknown origin, caused more damage after a partial extinguish. McDonald's previous home burned two years ago and the current house was recently built.
The Mount Dora Alumni Association will hold its annual dance next Friday July 31 at Mount Plymouth Country Club from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Proceeds support alumni activities and scholarships.
The Epworth League of Mount Dora won a district banner for best attendance at the DeLand district conference in Daytona Beach, led by Daniel H. Bishop. Members traveled by motor Friday, enjoyed beach time before the meeting, and hope to retain the prize at the next gathering among area towns including Eustis DeLand Daytona Beach and more.
Lake County Chamber of Commerce met in Tavares for a July session. A Kissimmee Board of Trade invitation to a waterways meeting July 24 was read. A $200 deficit payment for the county exhibit at the Central Florida Exposition was acknowledged. The audit covering 1930 31 was approved. Plans include printing 3000 county maps and future Leesburg meeting. Officers present included H C Brown and J R Ashmore with acting secretary Daisy Scott.
Two University of Florida Gainesville scholarships and one Florida State College for Women Tallahassee scholarship, each worth 200 a year for four years, are open to Lake County high school graduates. Exams cover English Literature General History American History and the Constitution and Algebra, with a passing grade of 70 percent. Exams scheduled at Tavares high school on Tuesday August 7 at 8:00 a.m.
Tickets available through association members or Miss Louise Lane at the Chamber of Commerce office. Price set at one dollar and fifty cents.
Kiwanis club held a noon luncheon with Attorney J W Hunter giving a clear talk on Taxes. He warned Florida faces stalled progress if real estate taxation remains excessive and urged economy plus new revenue sources beyond higher taxes. He noted state cuts and salary reductions while highlighting gasoline tax allocation as partial relief. Two out of town visitors attended and invited Mount Dora Kiwanis to a festival in Winter Park.
