Dr. C. A. Carriel told his Presbyterian congregation on the Fourth of July that patriotism cannot be religion. He warned against flag fanaticism, saying worship of nation can become idolatry and that the best Christian is the best citizen.
The oath of allegiance to the flag was used publicly for the first time in Lake county at Lady Lake on July 3 during a flag raising ceremony. Karl Lehman urged the audience to repeat the oath, which President Eisenhower signed into law on June 14 1954, declaring one nation under God with liberty and justice for all.
Miss Nettie F Theall, 77, died July 4 at Waterman Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She had lived here 16 years with her brother Frank A Theall and his wife on Lake Shore Drive, formerly from Boston. Private funeral services were held Tuesday at the residence with Dr C A Carriel in charge.
