Battle scarred officer visits Mount Dora in winter
Lieut. Col. Lem Downs arrives in Mount Dora this month after Korea’s bitter winter fighting. A 1947 Pentagon photo shows him receiving the Bronze Star from Major-General David G. Barr for World War II Pacific bravery. Downs also earned another Bronze Star and two Oak Leaf Clusters for Korea. He served on Barr’s staff in China before the regime’s fall, and Barr testified at the MacArthur hearings calling the Nationalists inept and corrupt.
