Observers at the Lake County post discuss acquiring a non underwriter approved extinguisher at a reasonable price and possibly a donation box, plus a first aid kit after incidents. They invite other spotters to comment on improving the post during daytime watches and the perme shift.
The A C Realty Company reports sale of a Lake Dora lot beside Mrs Dahm's home to Frank D Clements now a Mount Dora resident who plans to build soon. Another Montverde sale transfers 20 acres to Mrs Pearl Brewster for citrus planting and a grave site for her Army son returning after the war.
Water samples from Mount Dora Florida collected January 6 1943 at pump house and park show satisfactory results after 24 and 48 hour presumptive tests. Lab numbers 232 233 234 indicate sample sources before chlorination. Samples received by Florida State Board of Health January 7 1943.
Miss Shirley Coen of Mount Dora daughter of Mr and Mrs Sam M Coen will be among 21 seniors at Stetson University DeLand to receive bachelor of science in business administration at a January 29 mid term commencement. She is active in scholastic and social life and served as treasurer of the school of business.
Campbell, serving New York Life Insurance, becomes District Director for several Central Lake County counties guiding Aircraft Warning Service with Army support. F K Conn of Tampa says there must be no let up in home defense as Army fights abroad and relies on civilian warnings.
The Fourth Battalion Florida Defense Force now has five companies with E Company of Titusville joining the unit, guarding a stretch from near New Smyrna Beach to Anclote Island Eau Gallie. Mount Dora men are urged to enlist. B Company trains in guard duties and combat tactics with a growing rifle team led by Private Harding Corporal Treadwell and Sergeant Cox. Irving M Short, an expert rifleman, mentors shooters as drill at Eustis yields a strong patrol showing and four new roster additions.
Miss Twila Camp talked by trans oceanic telephone to Acting Sergeant W W Dismukes Jr in Hawaii at 12 30 a m our time about 7 o clock their time. He has been overseas almost a year and said his voice sounds as when he called from Leesburg. He has not had a furlough since he saved one Armed Forces in February. The talk was the first since he phoned from Camp Blanding February 22 just before leaving that camp.
The Topic cooperates with the Princess Theatre for a copper matinee next Friday January 29 from 3 to 4 PM. Children under twelve admitted free with scrap copper donation to aid war production. feature films Youth in Action and Moscow Strikes Back.
Mount Dora launches the Central Florida Council Boy Scouts annual fund drive Feb 8 to 13. The Kiwanis Club led campaign teams Blues and Reds will mobilize volunteers from local organizations to raise funds for scout programs and war effort leadership for youth.
Mrs. J. M Douglas announced that the State Welfare Board stopped accepting any new or renewed WPA work applications on January 15. The move reflects the WPA’s ongoing cessation of certifications.
Mrs. Lottie Cookinham received a telegram stating her son Sergeant Leroy Cookinham Air Corps is a prisoner of war held by the Japanese in the Philippine Islands. He was among the first U.S. forces sent to the Philippines. The last letter to his mother was written in November 1941. She had earlier been told he was missing in action after Bataan and Corregidor, and now expresses relief and happiness that he is still alive.
The Mount Dora Woman’s Club notes the death of Mrs. William T. Patterson, longtime member, who passed Saturday January 16 1943. Her gentle kindness and many deeds are praised, and her memory will live on through gifts. Those who knew her cherished her dearly.
The Villa Dora Hotel hosted a sequence of celebrations including a Christmas tree party with the Lake side Inn Ensemble and carols, a Colley wedding reception, and a New Year’s Eve gathering. Guests arriving recently include Emma Beers, Edmund Fisher, Geo Bach, and many others. Grace Porter made a five year return visit.

Mount Dora Kiwanis will mark the 28th Kiwanis International anniversary at this week’s meeting. Kiwanis was founded in Detroit on January 21 1915 and now includes over 2200 clubs in the U S and Canada with about 112 000 members, including 7500 in armed forces. A special message from Kiwanis International president Fred G McAlister will be read and the Kiwanis Education Committee led by Alfred Rehbaum will run the program. The Agriculture Committee earlier featured Lake County Agent R E Norris on National Farm Mobilization Week and noted difficulties faced by local farmers in obtaining fertilizer for essential crops. L M Denbroeder won the defense stamps.
The Rationing Board in Mount Dora relocates from City Hall to the Chamber of Commerce on Fifth Avenue and will stay open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Officials urge orderly use of War Ration Book One and explain plans for War Ration Book Two and new Coffee Coupon guidance. Several local supporters are thanked for help in setting up the new office.
The Community Church elected officers at its annual meeting led by Pastor Dr. James A. Richards. Trustees named Mabel Cleary George Cary D. Roseborough Frank E. Bridgman F A Whiting. Deacons elected for two years include George H. Peabody F L Lawin C H Estey. Treasurer Madeleine Milner Clerk Mrs George Keller Head Usher Olaf M Grimstead. Dinner preceded the meeting with a turkey supper organized by Mrs Florence G Hanscom.
Lake County schools presented a wartime activity report for students and adults, highlighting Red Cross work, scrap drives totaling 975000 value from 3672 students, model airplanes with 456 built, and 423 High School Victory Corps members. The program also covered 4624 county wide physical fitness participants, 476 4-H members, and 700 alumni in military service with 11 known lives lost. Maj. A L Holtz demonstrated equipping a soldier, and a Philadelphia brick presented to Florida schools capped the event.
