Miss Twila Camp talked by trans oceanic telephone to Acting Sergeant W W Dismukes Jr in Hawaii at 12 30 a m our time about 7 o clock their time. He has been overseas almost a year and said his voice sounds as when he called from Leesburg. He has not had a furlough since he saved one Armed Forces in February. The talk was the first since he phoned from Camp Blanding February 22 just before leaving that camp.

Mrs. Lottie Cookinham received a telegram stating her son Sergeant Leroy Cookinham Air Corps is a prisoner of war held by the Japanese in the Philippine Islands. He was among the first U.S. forces sent to the Philippines. The last letter to his mother was written in November 1941. She had earlier been told he was missing in action after Bataan and Corregidor, and now expresses relief and happiness that he is still alive.

Mount Dora Kiwanis to Observe 28th Kiwanis International Anniversary

Mount Dora Kiwanis will mark the 28th Kiwanis International anniversary at this week’s meeting. Kiwanis was founded in Detroit on January 21 1915 and now includes over 2200 clubs in the U S and Canada with about 112 000 members, including 7500 in armed forces. A special message from Kiwanis International president Fred G McAlister will be read and the Kiwanis Education Committee led by Alfred Rehbaum will run the program. The Agriculture Committee earlier featured Lake County Agent R E Norris on National Farm Mobilization Week and noted difficulties faced by local farmers in obtaining fertilizer for essential crops. Lake County Schools Report War Effort Across County

Lake County schools presented a wartime activity report for students and adults, highlighting Red Cross work, scrap drives totaling 975000 value from 3672 students, model airplanes with 456 built, and 423 High School Victory Corps members. The program also covered 4624 county wide physical fitness participants, 476 4-H members, and 700 alumni in military service with 11 known lives lost. Maj. A L Holtz demonstrated equipping a soldier, and a Philadelphia brick presented to Florida schools capped the event.
