Economy Becomes Key Focus For Next Legislature
As the 1939 session nears, governors and analysts predict a strong emphasis on economy in state government. Governor Cone advocates reducing expenditures and opposing new taxes, citing large cuts in his office and major departments. The Florida Tax Revision League notes a 66 percent drop in his office costs from 1936 to 1938 and a 30 percent cut in combined expenses of his office and six departments. The Road Department has also eliminated a deficit and moved to pay-as-you-go operations.
