The Chamber of Commerce announced tags won’t be available in Mount Dora until early February. The Tax Collector’s Office said the annual visit to Mount Dora is planned but the schedule is not yet complete. Meanwhile 1957 tags may be filed at the Tax Collector’s office in the courthouse at Tavares.

Young Census Takers Survey Mount Dora for Hospital Idea

Twenty five high school Student Council members fan out across Mount Dora to census households and gauge interest in a proposed local hospital. They work in sections, count population, and assess how many families use a hospital yearly, under a Denim Council contest and for the temporary hospital board. Charles Wareing and Tom Norris lead the canvassing, with exams possibly delaying the two week tally.

Railroad Fire Destroys Hibiscus Along Mount Dora Lakefront

Lakes and Hills Garden club plans a protest letter to Atlantic Coast Line after a railroad fire scorched hibiscus plants along Highway 441 near Mount Dora. The blaze also damaged a telegraph pole and nearby pines, while wind shifts spread the flames toward the hotel area. Garden club president Mrs. Carl S. Graves leads the effort to demand accountability and renewal of commitments to maintain the Mile of Beauty planting.

City seeks action on proposed sewage plant

Mayor W. D. Patton urges an all council Ways and Means and Planning committee session to push the long debated sewage treatment plant. The project faces site disputes centered on lake front property near Gilbert Park and ongoing objections from the Woman's Club. Mrs Therrien Dies On Family Visit In Massachusetts

Mrs Yvonne Therrien 71 died during a Christmas visit to family in Massachusetts. She lived in Mount Dora eight years at 603 Clarona Circle. Survived by husband Elzear two sons Norman and Robert of Lynn Mass a daughter Mrs James Stewart Swampscott Mass and six grandchildren. Last rites were held at St Jean's Church Lynn and interment followed in Massachusetts.

Industrial Survey Points Toward Dora Area Industry

City Attorney Roy Christopher presented an industrial survey for Mount Dora as part of a Golden Triangle prospectus. It notes limited skilled labor, available sites, and plans to compile with surveys from Eustis Tavares and Umatilla to attract small industries and local jobs.

Chanticleers to Perform for Youth Center Benefit

The Chanticleers male quartet will headline a Saturday night concert at the Community building to benefit the city's Youth Center. Tickets remain at the Chamber of Commerce Mount Dora Pharmacy and First National Bank or at the box office. The program spans Bach to Youmans with solos by all members and a Gilbert and Sullivan influence, featuring pianist Jerald Stone.

City Council Hikes Fuel Charge and Garbage Fees

The Mount Dora City Council adopted a plan to raise city revenue by about $20,000, including a fuel charge increase from 10 to 15 percent, a 25 cent monthly garbage fee, and a property tax reassessment to raise 2 mills. The measure also eliminates the 10 percent fuel tax for electricity users consuming 300 kilowatts or more per month and directs the tax assessor to revalue assessments by 20 percent starting Jan 1, 1957. The plan aims to fund improvements such as the East Town swimming pool and to encourage electricity use.

Chamber Annual Parley Feb 1 is Tomorrow

The Chamber of Commerce holds its annual meeting Friday February 1 at the Community building. Dr Wayne Reitz president of the University of Florida will speak at the 6 15 dinner meeting a joint session of Rotary Kiwanis and Lions clubs Limited guest seats remain and tickets should be reserved at the Chamber office The event also marks the start of the membership drive for the chamber.

Grandmother and grandson Both Suffer Mishap in Hospital Visit

Dwain Muecke ten-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Muecke underwent an appendicitis operation at Waterman Memorial hospital in Eustis. His grandmother Anna Muecke visiting Dwain fell on hospital steps, breaking her kneecap, and also became a patient nearby. Both are reported doing nicely this week.

City Council Pledges Pool Fund Match and March Deadline

The City Council approved a seven thousand dollar fund match for the East Town Swimming Pool and will invest the amount in a short term federally protected instrument. City Clerk William C. Stewart announced the move from reserves in the street department general fund and light and water departments. The Negro community has until March 1 to raise funds for the poor, after which the city will move forward with the plan.
