Decline in Fish Runs Linked to Water Quality in Three Lakes
In 1965 the Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission logged an average catch of 11,502 pounds per day from Lakes Dora Beauclair and Carlton using a 1600 yard haul seine. A 1967 cooperative seining plan of 100 trips was cut short by poor catches, with rough fish dying or leaving the lakes over 28 months. Game fish were scarce except in Lake Beauclair, where several hundred pounds were caught on six occasions. Poor water quality is blamed for the general decline, though stocks of game fish are thought adequate for reproduction. Numerous bumper strips are available from the Lake County Chamber of Commerce.
