The Lakes and Hills Garden club forum urged off street parking as a practical and energy saving alternative to lawn care. Kenneth Trumbull described carporte designs while Fire Chief Larsen warned of railroad sparked fires and motorists warned of on street parking hazards.
A Baptist church opens a week of missionary services starting Sunday evening with Jack Epps of Janes Christian Action. Speakers include Dr. John Means of Jacksonville, Rev. Genus Crenshaw, Dr. C. L. Quarles, and Hampton-Dubose Academy students sharing their parents’ missions. Peggy Pimble of Leesburg closes the event with Brazil mission. Special music and mission studies precede each service at 7 p.m. through Friday.
Author Pat Frank received the Distinguished Service Citation from the Reserve Officers Association at a banquet in Washington. The civilian honor, first in 35 years, recognized his book Forbidden Area detailing saboteurs infiltrating the Air Force.
Andrew W Cleary 64 died Tuesday night at his son Roberts Sixth Ave home after a long illness. He had lived there for a year, came from Compton California. He leaves another son Merle of Eustis and a daughter Mrs E A Swartz Compton a sister Mrs H E Moore Compton a brother John Cage California and 100 children.
Lake County shows interest in relaxing rules on married students and on spouses teaching on the same campus. Superintendent Jenkins wants a policy change to ease hiring problems and curb perceived disruptions as soon as next fall.
The Chamber of Commerce wrapped up its first week of a membership drive with $2389 raised toward a $7000 target. Top contributor was First National Bank with $250, followed by Lakeside Inn $125 and Howard Simpson $120. Numerous businesses and individuals joined with $25 and $50 memberships, including Mount Dora Pharmacy, Citrus Culture Corp, Paul Turrentine, and Rotary Club among many others.
The Lake County Board of Public Instruction accepted a resignation from Robert Bumgardner of Mount Dora from the county maintenance superintendent post appointed in January. His departure follows his stated "previous commitments" and comes as the board approves a reduced salary for the position and hires Walter Hawthorne of Tavares at 5200.
The Maine Tourist club of Central Florida led by L Forrest Deane of Mount Dora will hold its annual picnic at Pomona Park near Palatka on February 21 with a pot luck luncheon at 12 30. All Maine people in the area are invited and asked to bring a covered dish.
Roy Christopher was reelected president of the Chamber of Commerce at the board reorganization. Richard Edgerton becomes first vice president, R. C. Bardwell second vice president, with Betty Siess reelected as secretary. Board members include O. M. "Jack" Simpson, George J. White, J. G. Ray Jr., M. O. "Buster" Williams, Arnold Haynes, J. E. Forther, G. B. Hurlburt, W. M. Kennedy, and Kendall Jones. both Al Rehbaum Sr. and Carl S. Graves resigned after long service.
Mrs Sadie Brown of McDonald Jr sent a red faced note to Congressman A S Syd Herlong Jr to prompt continued courteous and lawful representation. Herlong said he received the card Monday acknowledging a clue from a Topic news story about a constituent who forgot to sign a letter.
The Dora’s Little Theatre company postpones its February production of Mr. Roberts after actor Earl Stary collapses backstage and dies during a dress rehearsal. George Battle steps in for Stary as the cast mourns, and the show is rescheduled to the week of March 10. Stary, a Navy veteran and life insurance agent, leaves a wife, Cindy, daughter Sandra, and mother Mrs. E. E. Horak. The tragedy follows a history of heart illness and a 1954裁 court case involving his family.
