Tax Paying Citizens and the Hidden Town Workers
In a reflection on a tourist town, a resident lists the many public employees who maintain safety, sanitation, water, and city services. He notes 125 town workers, 25 firefighters, 15 police, 16 street cleaners, 12 trash crews, lifeguards, water department staff, and a city hall team plus five commissioners and a city manager. He jokes about paying little in taxes yet receiving essential services, wondering how to explain the value to others. The piece ends with a playful confession of fiscal surprise and pride in communal labor.
